Day one—a Tuesday

Geese land with awkward grace
with a fumble, a stumble, and a flap.

It is fall—
the air crinkles with a snap—
the scent of damp leaves—
a cold breeze hints.

I wade through the dead leaves
thick as snow
and I reach for the otherness

that always starts about now.
